Linux-fundamentals courses




We offer a generic modularised Linux-fundamentals course covering all major ares of configuring and applying Linux-machines. The components of the course are illustrated below in figure linux-fundamentals1.

The major parts of the course include:

Part1: Installing Linux: (3-4 seminars) and Linux-based programs

To-hard-disk installation of Linux to x-86 based machines:
  1. Installing community-based distributions:Fedora, Debian and Gentoo Linux(es),
  2. installing commonly available commercial Linux distributions; SuSE Linux, Mandrake Linux and Slackware Linux,
  3. installing programs from source code,
  4. removing programs previously installed from-source-code,
  5. installing/un-installing programs from binary package managers (rpm and deb).
Optional 1: To-hard-disk installation of Linux to ppC based machines:(1-2 seminars lab/lecture):
Optional 2: Network based Installation (2-3 seminars lab/lecture)

Part 2: The Linux kernel/machine startup: (2-3 seminars)

2a: Exploring the Linux kernel:
  1. The kernel source code,
  2. kernel configuration, building and installation,
  3. device-drivers modules,
  4. loading and un-loading device-driver modules.
2b: Machine startup and initialisation
  1. The init program,
  2. run-levels,
  3. boot-loaders,
  4. booting with and without initial ram-disk,
  5. booting modern Linux machines and UDEV.

Part 3: Machine administration(2-3 seminars)

  1. User and group administration,
  2. file permissions,
  3. local and network printing with CUPS,
  4. finding, using and providing documentation,
  5. backup using various open-source programs,
  6. scheduling using cron and related utilities,
  7. managing log-files, logrotate etc.,
  8. managing time on Linux machines.

Part 4: Linux files-systems: and file-system devices (2-3 seminars)

  1. Features of common Linux file-systems,
  2. commands and options for creating/destroying file-systems of various types,
  3. maintaining file-systems with fsck utilities,
  4. mounting file-systems,
  5. network-based file-systems,
  6. the loopback file-system,
  7. implementing Linux 'soft' RAID,
  8. file-systems on magneto-optical medium,
  9. file-systems on flash-memory,
  10. modern device management with devfs/devfsd and UDEV.

Part 5: Shells and shell programming (2-3 seminars):

  • Unix shells,
  • customizing the shell environment,
  • setting paths,
  • the bash shell,
  • commands for file and directory modifications,
  • using find,
  • creating and changing hard and symbolic links,
  • regular expression,
  • processing text-streams using filters,
  • controlling Linux processes,
  • commands for file-streams, pipes, and re-direction,
  • shell programming,
  • making a shell script executable,
  • example shell scripts.

Course duration and certification:

The 'minimum-version' of the course covers 6 seminars (2 days). This can rise to ~ 15 sessions (1 week). For those interested in certification, A part of this course mirrors the requirement of the LPI-101 and LPI102 as well as the SAIR LCA-system administration. Details of the LPI and SAIR programs are available from the LPI and SAIR web-sites respectively. There are also large areas particularly on file-systems and device management in modern Linux in our course beyond these certification syllabuses.
