Computer networking fundamentals
Network backbone: (category5 and 6 cabling),
Network backbone: introduction to optical fibres and fibre-optic cabling,

The Linux kernel and network device drivers,

Configuration and use CUPS (the common unix print system),

configuration and use of nfs (file server),
some novel uses of nfs.
Introduction to names resolution services
Administering a domain by DNS.

Configuring machines for Internet-wide services:
Installation, configuration and use of modern ftp servers,
installation and configuration of the Apache web-server,
installation configuration of Apache-Tomcat; the Java-based application/server,
Optional: configuration and use of apache/apache tomcat/postgresql (database enabled web-service).
Electronic mail services
Installation and configuration of popular MTAs (mail transport agents) Sendmail, Postfix and Exim,
configuration of Mailman; the mailing-list manager,
Installation and configuring courier postfix/imap/postgresql/apache for ( for web-mail).
Routers and firewalls:
Introduction to Linux routing,
the Linux kernel and the /proc file-system,
introduction to netfilter iptables,
designing firewall scripts.

The course is now in its 4th year and has undergone numerous revisions and feedback from past students.
Course duration: The full course is normally over 14 sessions (3 and half days). Shorter courses usually for the SAIR LCE (or equivalent) courses are usually up to 6 sessions (one-and-a-half days or two days). Excellent computer-lab facilities are provided, but students can also bring their portable/laptop computers to perform the lab exercises if they so wish.
