Welcome to b-linuxuser-group's website for training-seminars and consultancy.

Linux - what it is:

Linux is just a computer program. It is a freely-available and freely-usable program. As more and more of the things we do, of the things done to us are wedded to the computer, computer usage becomes ever more important. As most humans value freedom, this makes Linux a very important computer program.

Linux follows from where computers came-from; science and engineering, where it was long understood that open//shared knowledge enlightens and enriches us all. A full description of Linux is given on our companion (not-for-profit) site b-lux.org.

What this web-site is for:

This website firstly offers courses and tutorials for using Linux-based computing machines. The courses can be at our tutorial centre in South London. We also on request offer training courses off-site around Britain or in the EU. Our courses are tutor-based and we provide course materials on both paper and electronic media. This site also introduces our consultancy services. We offer consulancy relating to embedded/network and industrial/instrumentation application of Linux-based machines. Courses and consultancy services are described below.

Reasons to use Linux:

  • It imparts user-freedom: The user is free to share Linux with his peers without breaking any laws; it belongs to the community to which we all belong.
  • It is built on open standards: Linux uses open file-formats, supported by many companies/organisations. The user is not forced to use a proprietary standard.
  • The freedom from viruses: The design of Linux makes it more resistant to viruses.
  • It runs on many different type of computing-machines and processors. So the skills learned in using Linux are very transferable.
  • It has high stability: Linux is fast and rarely crashes. It uses open-source-code hardened by millions of programmers and volunteer-testers finding and fixing bugs rapidly.
  • It is technically very advanced. The open and collaborative method by which Linux is developed ensures that the best ideas are incorporated in the kernel.
  • It has massive worldwide support: Linux has the support of many computer companies large and small (eg HP, IBM. SGI, Hitachi, SuSE, RedHat, Basis Volume....), our best universities and a massive army of worldwide volunteers.
  • It is sold by more that one company: The user is not forced to buy from a monopolistic supplier. Moreover a user short-of-funds is not forced into vulnerable illegality as Linux can also be obtained for free.
  • It has low cost (often as low as zero): It is thus miles cheaper to deploy and maintain than proprietary 'software'. For large-scale users the savings can be truly staggering.
  • There are no license fees:There are no per seat licenses, yearly license fees and such nonsenses with Linux. The code(s) on which it and associated programs are based are in the public domain.
  • It has a rapidly growing library of related computer applications: The development of programs for Linux is growing rapidly. For example in two years Linux has moved from barely having an office suite to now having several. Finding a high quality program for CAD or accounting or video-editing for Linux is now very easy and many programs are under development.

Seminars offered:

We offer a comprehensive set of Linux courses. These courses have been enhanced by extensive feedback from former students. Moreover because our main sponsor (
Basis Volume ) makes and sells Linux-based machines, our course materials have been enhanced by feedback from every-day Linux-users also. The areas/topics our courses cover include: Our courses are modular and individual modules can be joined to make unique courses. Also our course modules are evolving so courses-areas not on this website are often under-development. Please click on the 'Courses' on the navigation system below the b-lux logo above for more details on the main topics/types we offer. For information about course dates and fees and areas of courses not on the site, please Contact us.

Consultancy services offered:

Our background is from science and engineering and we have vast experience in a number of areas in which fee-based consultancy is offered these include:
  • Installing local area networks in /copper/CAT5E/CAT6 or/optical fibre,
  • Linux-based web services, LAN services and electronic-mail services,
  • Linux-based network-routing and related applications (for example VOIP),
  • analogue data acquisition with Linux-based machines.
  • interfacing sensors (for pressure, temperature, photon-counting etc) to data-acquisition units on Linux-machines.
  • sourcing sensors and where necessary sensor-signal conditioning devices for data-acquisition units of the type above,
  • sourcing Linux device drivers for popular analogue data acquisition cards,
  • network-based instrumentation/applications in the laboratory and on the factory floor.
Whatever the size of your organisation:
  • a one-man-band,
  • a medium sized company/organisation,
  • a centre of excellence/learning,
  • a government department/or parastatal,
  • a process plant (eg steel, oil-refining, power-generation etc.),
  • a non-industrial company/organisation/institution,
for the areas above we can offer a high quality consultancy service at a reasonable fee. All our assignments are accompanied by quality, well-researched documentation. So if you are interested in using Linux-based machines; in valuing freedom and saving money please
